Back to California to resume the journey! Zero Bold for Blue Awards and Advocating on Capitol Hill

Image
We traveled back to yesterday on a flight from DC to  California  to resume the miles for money journey. We had an extraordinary experience out east. After the Cash, Sweat & Tears award from the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum , we enjoyed a few days with Scott’s brother Randy and his family.  This filled our hearts. We miss family and look forward to seeing more family on our trip home early April for Scott’s next Mayo visit.   After Philly, we took a train to Washington DC area and immediately got dressed up to head to the Zero Prostate Cancer Bold for Blue awards. We were honored to receive the IMPACT award, and the top Fundraising Award. Thank you to all of you as you are the reason we have received these awards, and we deeply appreciate your support of our efforts. Scott shared his story; I shared a few words about the fundraising – in particular, thanking all of you and  Randy for his generous match!  You can find these speeches, and everyone else's for the very special

Cash Sweat and Tears award, Philly

Scott took a break from biking, after pushing past 7000 miles and getting to Santa Barbara, CA., for us to fly to Philly to attend an awards luncheon. We are very honored to have received the Cash, Sweat & Tears award at the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum’s annual recognition of the year’s most inspiring volunteers. sponsored by Blackbaud.  See the linked press release here . Zero Prostate Cancer nominated Scott for this award for his drive and motivation to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer. The CEO of Zero, Courtney Bugler, introduced us, underscoring the persistence, determination and work ethic Scott has exhibited throughout the 7000 miles, and 8 months of the journey. Scott then spoke to the audience about why he was doing this journey. If you have never heard Scott's story live, I urge you to go on Facebook  and listen to the video of his speech.  The ballroom had about 600 people representing multiple charities from around the world - and there was not a dry

Nearing 7000 miles in, an earthquake and other California experiences.

California is improving!  We did experience a 4.6 earthquake last week which made the camper shake, but no damage done and another "adventure" to add to the experiences.  Scott had a couple of gorgeous rides along the coast and is looking forward to another long (90 mile) ride tomorrow from the  Hollywood RV park to Santa Barbara.  He is almost to 7000 miles into this charitable  journey to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer and schizophrenia, to honor his life and Benny's life!   One of the highlights of this journey is all the wonderful people we have met and who have supported us along the way.   Our LLS (Leukemia Lymphoma Society Team in Training friends have been terrific - from donations to the two charities we are supporting (zero prostate cancer and psychosis and schizophrenia action alliance,) to fundraising with us, to media releases, to designing and maintaining the website,  to posts on Facebook to raise awareness, to connecting us with friends to

Rough start to California , 6700 miles

Image
Scott finally took the time to sit and add up totals and saw that he is over 6700 into the milesformoney.org journey! Hooray! However so far California has been rough. Besides the three flats, he has had two falls.  The first fall was very scary. Scott always strives to be cautious. Even so accidents happen. He was on a good road with a good shoulder on a beautiful day with no adverse conditions when his front tire caught in a rut. Scott came over the handlebars of his bike and went face/ headfirst into a guard rail. Strangely the Garmin incident notification that had gone off a couple of days earlier when his bike fell over in the wind did NOT go off with this unbelievably bad fall. I found out when Scott called me. I had just left Glamis North RV Park and Scott came off near Brawley CA. I was 20 minutes away and Scott sounded very shook up and not quite normal.  A truly kind angel, Miguel, stopped to block traffic with his vehicle and to help Scott. I talked to Miguel, and he agree
