Back to California to resume the journey! Zero Bold for Blue Awards and Advocating on Capitol Hill

We traveled back to yesterday on a flight from DC to  California  to resume the miles for money journey. We had an extraordinary experience out east. After the Cash, Sweat & Tears award from the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum, we enjoyed a few days with Scott’s brother Randy and his family.  This filled our hearts. We miss family and look forward to seeing more family on our trip home early April for Scott’s next Mayo visit.

After Philly, we took a train to Washington DC area and immediately got dressed up to head to the Zero Prostate Cancer Bold for Blue awards. We were honored to receive the IMPACT award, and the top Fundraising Award. Thank you to all of you as you are the reason we have received these awards, and we deeply appreciate your support of our efforts. Scott shared his story; I shared a few words about the fundraising – in particular, thanking all of you and  Randy for his generous match!  You can find these speeches, and everyone else's for the very special night,  on the Zero Prostate Cancer site and more of coverage of the trip on  Katy’s Facebook Page.   We were so very moved by hearing all the stories of those impacted by prostate cancer.   We heard from survivors but also from family members that lost their spouse, their father, their friend.   These stories empower us to push on.

The highlight of the trip was advocating on Capitol Hill yesterday for more funds and awareness for prostate cancer. We had several meetings with Minnesota staffers for Representatives and our Senators. All the offices were diligent about listening and asking questions. The current bills we discussed are a start – but so much more needs to be done. We will be anxiously following the Congressional developments and be following up to see what comes of our efforts. If you want to hear more about the legislative initiatives be sure to follow up with me.

Tomorrow Scott will be speaking to Giant Bicycle, a sponsor, about his story and the experiences he has had along the way. Friday Scott will be biking out of Santa Barbara where he left off for the break.   When he left off he was over 7000 miles into the trip.

We have a few more months and several thousand more miles, to reach more people and raise more funds. The Zero Prostate Cancer Summit left us emotionally re-energized from hearing the stories of the individuals and families so impacted by prostate cancer. We will continue to fight on until this disease is zeroed out.   Milesformoney.org
