Bike Faster Scott! Mayo report – new metastasis and radiation, slight delay
As we have said over and over, we are so extremely fortunate for the excellent care we have received by the medical professionals along the way. This visit was no different and the Mayo report follows.
The PSA was up a bit more to .36, and the PSMA pet scan showed some new metastasis in the bones. The other blood work looked normal. Today we saw Dr. Eugene Kwon, Scott's primary provider who explained the test results and is directing his care, and Dr. Sean Park, Mayo Radiation Oncologist.
Dr. Kwon was already prepared with a plan at our 7:15 am appointment today. Dr Park was not even on the schedule but made time for Scott ( thanks to Dr. Kwon,) when the PMSA pet scan showed some new mets that need to be addressed now. Dr. Kwon talked to Dr. Park, who got Scott in for the consult today, and then Dr. Park designed the simulation, which also happened today. Mayo again illustrated a fantastic team approach and communication! The radiation will begin on Monday, happen again on Tuesday and Wednesday. Scott also had another Lupron shot (hormone deprivation therapy) today.
One of the spots is again on the right clavicle, and with the higher dose Scott may have some inflammation and pain from the radiation. The other spot is on a rib with intestines very nearby – which means a risk of necropsy and a colostomy bag if the intestines get too much radiation. So, Dr. Park will be very, very careful with dose and placement of radiation.
We know Scott is tough and determined – he has repeatedly demonstrated this over 8000 miles of bad weather, worse weather, bad roads, worse roads, bad routes, equipment failures and a crash into a guard rail. But we also learned today from the CT scan, (part of the pet scan), that he has a newly healing fractured rib that he has been biking with… without complaining. We think it happened not in the face first crash into the guard rail which impacted the right side, but the second crash a week later where he hit the left side. Sigh. My very tough husband did not complain but kept biking. His mission purpose is very strong.
I have to repeat, we are so blessed by the Mayo doctors and system. These doctors are so terrific about planning and executing Scott’s excellent care, but also doing so while being cognizant of the mission he is on. We are incredibly grateful. We are a bit delayed for our return to Oregon but taking advantage of extra time here to see family, friends and go to church Sunday. When Scott finishes the radiation, we will return to pick up where he left off- we still plan to make the deadline of biking into Itasca State Park June 15th – but I told Scott to “bike faster”. No doubt he will do so. As always, remember we are doing this to raise funds and awareness. WE DO NOT want others to go through what Scott has gone through. We want to encourage men to get an early screening PSA, as with early detection lives may be saved. And we are fundraising for Zero prostate cancer – here is the link to donate.

Help us help others with your donations. Let’s ZERO out prostate cancer.
On to do another talk tomorrow night at TFW South Metro, a fantastic training facility where Scott and I were both blessed to train when we lived closer. Their warrior philosophy, embodied by their leadership and the familia, as well as their culture, is something we still embrace to this day. See you tomorrow familia!
Thank you for all the prayers, as we believe in the power of
prayer and through Christ’s strength all things are possible. Katy And Scott
