For today's Blog I asked Scott's coach Neil King to share a few words about Scott's training for the 11,000 mile cycle.

Scott came to me 2 years age wanting to know if he could ride around all the exterior states of our country if he worked hard at training for it.  Riding a bike for 5- 6 days a week for 300 miles week after week won’t be an easy task for anyone, let alone someone with stage 4 cancer.  However, we have spent the past 2 years remaking  a big strong hockey player into an endurance athlete and now Scott is ready for the journey. Scott trained throughout his ongoing treatment and never used that treatment for a reason to not train.

Scott and I have used all the tools available to get him ready for this huge endeavor.  The web site Training Peaks has given us the metrics to start, follow, and analyze his progress in training.  Using Time, Speed, Watts, Heart Rate along with a progressive approach to training we have slowly but surely given him the ability for a good start.  He will be the one that needs to keep it going. That is along with his companion, sag, trailer mover, wife who will be taking care of the details along the way.

Someone asked me how I got Scott ready to ride 11,000 miles?  I said, “no one is ready to ride 11,000 miles."   Every day, every week taken one at a time Scott will make the journey with proper nutrition, enough rest, and adequate recovery and a huge dose of perseverance.   This is beyond what most humans have ever done and it will require extraordinary teamwork along with his personal effort.

Along the way Scott's body will go through major changes as the miles, days and weeks start to pile up.  The upper body will loose muscle mass as it really isn’t needed for bicycling.  The lower body will gain longer muscles used in endurance.  He will look leaner and more and more like an ultra endurance athlete that he will be becoming.

Scott wants to thank his Coach for the terrific training that he has received and the friendship that has developed.

Neil King lives in Park Rapids, MN.  He has trained numerous athletes over the last several years  to national and international success for short and long endurance events, triathlons.   Neil himself has had over 120 triathlons, qualification and completion at Kona World Championship, Podium finishes in ITU World Championships, USAT National Championships to name just a few!
