Equipment challenges necessitated a change to the road bike today

Scott has had the expected equipment challenges - such as flat tires.  He also had a  Garmin edge failure (thank you to Garmin who did replace it), and now the derailer hanger is broken so his Otso gravel bike is unrideable until it is fixed.

Having things repaired on the road is challenging when you are moving almost every day. First, bike stores don't necessarily have the parts we need. Second, if they do have the parts, they may not have the time.  Third, back to my earlier comment - no time to order in parts or leave the bike as we are on the move.  We did bring whatever we could anticipate in extra parts - but even so we still didn't think of everything we would need.  This necessitates guessing how far ahead we need to have parts shipped to, and finding a bike store that can fit him in on the approximate date we will be there.  Thank you to NOW bikes out of ARDEN HILLS, and  Mike Bieber who have been terrific to help us with these challenges. Also thank you  to Steve Gunther and his contacts in Florida who are making it possible to get the bike repaired soon. Previously we got the same great help from Larry Langmore in Maine!    We sincerely appreciate you guys.

Meanwhile Scott is on the back up bike.   For some time Scott has been making do, biking the gravel bike with just the front derailer - which means he didn't have the gears to go up hill if he needed them. Thankfully, we are now in Georgia near the coast so elevation is not a problem. However with the gravel bike now completely out until repaired Scott used his back up bike today, the Framed road bike. He loves this bike, other than for sand or dirt roads as the skinny tires are not conducive to riding in those conditions.  That means Scott is likely walking for part of his bike today as unpaved sections were on the route.  Walking is not fun in bike shoes with clips.  Scott is over 3600 miles in, and Georgia is his 20th state.   Great job Scott!   Scott has extraordinary perseverance to continue even with the equipment challenges, among all the other challenges.  He does it for his "why" which is to raise awareness and funds for  prostate cancer and schizophrenia.    milesformoney.org
