TEXAS 5300 miles : December is a triple match opportunity with Zero prostate cancer!

Today Scott is out biking and it's in 50s with rain coming down steadily.  He is biking through Dallas, Texas.  Scott is very determined. Earlier in the week he had a couple of 73 mile rides; one that was filled with unpaved roads, dead ends and mechanical problems. One that was sunny and 65, great roads, no dead ends and a wonderful country ride!  One of the questions we have been asked is why are you having so many problems with routing.

Here is the process we go through. Prior to the start of this trip, Scott spent many hours studying the adventure cycle maps to determine the basic route.  During the trip we are using Ride with GPS, a bike specific software that maps the "bike route" from point A to point B.  We also run the route through google bike.   I will also compare the google bike route, and ride with GPS route, to my truck and camper route.  I also look at the "heat maps" on ride with GPS to see how many people have been on the route Scott is taking.  Sometimes those heat maps show that no one has been on the route (or at least no one that has used ride with GPS).  This is always concerning, but sometimes we have no other choice to get him from Point A to Point B.

Once we have a basic route I make sure we can find a place to park the camper - RV park or boon docking. (Staying somewhere with no power, like a Walmart parking lot or through harvest hosts, some rather fun places.) We try to make sure the routes are in the 60-70 mile range however, he has done as long as 108 mile routes on occasion, and shorter when there is a lot of elevation!  Assuming I can find a place I then download the route, and send it to Scott's Garmin edge computer and to his phone.  We put in a  lot of time and effort on the routes, and generally the routes are quite good. Sometimes the routes are not good.  Overall  ride with GPS is good but not great.

It's hard on Scott mentally and physically when what is suppose to be a 70 mile ride over paved roads becomes an 80 mile ride over tough dirt roads or a longer ride due to turning around from dead ends.  (Hard on me too as I worry about him.)  But Scott is DETERMINED and PERSISTENT!   He stays calm and carries on. Then he puts the rough moments and days behind him.  He goes on with his optimistic nature.   How he does this bike trip is how he has approached cancer treatments too.

As you know if you have been following us this last 6 months, Scott is doing this to honor the life he has been given and his son Benny's life.  We are supporting Zero Prostate cancer. Happily Zero has another double match going on this month.   With Randy's match it means another triple match opportunity!   We are thankful for all that have donated.  Know that every time that $$$ ticker total goes up Scott and I both get excited. Zero does great work, for patients and their families. Even so much more work is to be done. Someone still dies with prostate cancer every 15 minutes. We look forward to the day that prostate cancer is zero'd out!  So we approach the fundraising the same determination that Scott approaches his rides.  Please consider a December donation, (link on our website: www.milesformoney.org).

 Thank you!
