California! Determination, perseverance , resoluteness, relentless

Image
Today Scott bikes into California, from Salome to Blythe. In a couple of days, he will have a bike ride with almost 7000 in elevation gain over 70 miles... i.e., he is biking up a mountain. His last few rides included:   Biked through 60 miles of steady chilly rain, 48-50 degrees, uphill with a low tire pressure on his back tire. Biked through a mountain pass with  very narrow shoulders. Biked into  into 30 mile per hour winds on the side of a freeway, a big shoulder, but with cars and big trucks driving 85 miles per hour! ·         Scott is almost 6500 miles into this miles for money journey and one thing he has repeatedly shown through all these conditions is his determination, perseverance, resoluteness, and relentlessness. He has a DO NOT QUIT attitude. This is the same character that I know means he will always fight against the cancer. I have seen him fight  through the radical prostatectomy, the radiation with hormone deprivation therapy, the chemotherapy with hormone depr

Cancer statistics are on the rise

Image
Scott is well over 6,200 miles into the milesformoney trip. He is making great progress. The progress on the cancer front is not as good as the cycle trip news. The new American Cancer Society statistics show an increase in all cancers diagnosed including rises in prostate cancer and breast cancer. The perception is that prostate cancer is not diagnosed as often as breast cancer. Sadly, new prostate cancer cases are to be neck and neck with new breast cancer cases. 299,050 new prostate cancer cases are expected this year - and 35,000 prostate cancer deaths. Men tend to not talk about prostate cancer as a recent high-profile case has suggested. Also, more aggressive prostate cancers are being diagnosed.  Watch the video here: https://fb.watch/pE23JK4KA4/ ( I posted on my Facebook site, or you can go to the American Cancer Society site to read the statistics. )  Early detection can make a difference for all of the "silent killers". As Scott has stated often, at 53 with zero s

Travel challenges - sleeping in a very cold camper after a very long day of travel

Image
Good morning from Las Cruces, New Mexico. Scott had just one day back biking when we had to take an unscheduled day off due to a high wind warning, with wind gusts up to 70 mph, a dust storm and low visibility. These winds are not safe for Scott to bike or for me to drive the "high profile" camper. We never plan to far in advance just in case we have an issue such as this one. But it still means having to call multiple RV parks and asking to delay our reservation by a day. I am happy to report that all of them were accommodating! For anyone that has traveled, the rewards of travel are fantastic, but they don't come without challenges. Our recent travel back to El Paso was an example of the challenges. First, we encountered multiple airline delays: a mechanical (the airline had to start one of the engines at the gate?!  Yes, only ONE of the engines, the other started "as normal" on the runway.) Second we had multiple delays of the second flight for unknown re

Mayo Visit January 3-4 2024 with Dr Kwon and his team

Image
First, we are incredibly grateful to Dr. Kwon and his team. We have complete faith in them which makes the journey so much easier. Even so it is always stressful when testing is coming up as well as waiting for results. We are truly fortunate that because Mayo is so efficient it is a very short wait for results and decisions. Scott’s PSA went up a bit further over the last few months and he has some small visible m etastases (mets) revealed from the choline pet scan. One is the right clavicle from the last visit, and a “tiny” spot on a left rib, and an “indeterminate” spot on a lymph node. If you know Scott’s history, you know prior to chemo a couple of years ago Scott had a significant amount of bone and lymph node mets based on both the choline and PSMA pet scans. The PSMA pet scan tended to show more of the bone mets, the choline more of the lymph node mets. These all faded away through chemotherapy and hormone deprivation therapy. But in the last 6 months the cancer stopped sl
