Mayo Visit January 3-4 2024 with Dr Kwon and his team

First, we are incredibly grateful to Dr. Kwon and his team. We have complete faith in them which makes the journey so much easier. Even so it is always stressful when testing is coming up as well as waiting for results. We are truly fortunate that because Mayo is so efficient it is a very short wait for results and decisions.

Scott’s PSA went up a bit further over the last few months and he has some small visible metastases (mets) revealed from the choline pet scan. One is the right clavicle from the last visit, and a “tiny” spot on a left rib, and an “indeterminate” spot on a lymph node. If you know Scott’s history, you know prior to chemo a couple of years ago Scott had a significant amount of bone and lymph node mets based on both the choline and PSMA pet scans. The PSMA pet scan tended to show more of the bone mets, the choline more of the lymph node mets. These all faded away through chemotherapy and hormone deprivation therapy. But in the last 6 months the cancer stopped sleeping.   The last two visits have been an increase in PSA and new tiny bone mets.  Next visit Scott will have a  PSMA pet scan  to compare with the Choline pet scan, and determine how the cancer is behaving and what will come next.

The report was about what we expected but we still would appreciate if the cancer just went back to sleep! Scott will continue with the bike journey, and we will put it out of our heads until we go back to Mayo in a few months.

We are as passionate as ever to continue the mission to improve awareness and increase funding for more research, better treatments and eventually a cure.  Early detection saves lives, and the PSA test is inexpensive simple blood test. With Scott’s familial history he should have been checked much earlier – we just didn’t know better. In fact many medical professionals still advocate for no testing as it leads to over treatment - which we respectfully disagree with as it leads to late detection of aggressive cancer.  We hope through sharing Scott's story and continuing the mission others will get tested earlier, and if needed, treated earlier.

One of the most amazing things about Scott is his attitude. Even though we spent his 60th birthday at Mayo, we made the most of it, laughing, celebrating, exercising, and having fun along the way. That is who Scott is and one of the things I most admire about him through the cancer and the bike journey.

Back on the bike next week! https://www.milesformoney.org/
