California! Determination, perseverance , resoluteness, relentless

 




Today Scott bikes into California, from Salome to Blythe. In a couple of days, he will have a bike ride with almost 7000 in elevation gain over 70 miles... i.e., he is biking up a mountain. His last few rides included:

  •  Biked through 60 miles of steady chilly rain, 48-50 degrees, uphill with a low tire pressure on his back tire.
  • Biked through a mountain pass with  very narrow shoulders.
  • Biked into into 30 mile per hour winds on the side of a freeway, a big shoulder, but with cars and big trucks driving 85 miles per hour!

·       Scott is almost 6500 miles into this miles for money journey and one thing he has repeatedly shown through all these conditions is his determination, perseverance, resoluteness, and relentlessness. He has a DO NOT QUIT attitude. This is the same character that I know means he will always fight against the cancer. I have seen him fight  through the radical prostatectomy, the radiation with hormone deprivation therapy, the chemotherapy with hormone deprivation therapy and new modalities of treatment to push back on the cancer.

Scott and I share the traits of determination and perseverance. (Sometimes we must rein in each other, so we do not cross over into stubbornness, foolishly sticking to a goal!) What does it mean to have this in your "makeup"? It means not looking at the obstacles but keeping your eyes focused on the goal. It means finding a way up, over, through or around the obstacles. There will always be obstacles when you have a goal. The question is whether you give up or persevere.  

We have experienced many obstacles along the way to get to this point. Suffice it to say we are both determined to continue to completion. We are beyond excited to know we are about as far west as we are going, and about to turn north. We expect to be in California the whole month of February. Partially due to taking a week off to do a trip back East for some awards and the Zero Prostate Cancer Summit, partially to ensure we see many friends and friends of friends in California. Bike Faster Scott! Mayo report – new metastasis and radiation, slight delay

As we have said over and over, we are so extremely fortunate for the excellent care we have received by the medical professionals  along the way. This visit was no different and the Mayo report follows.   The PSA was up a bit more to .36, and the PSMA pet scan showed some new metastasis in the bones. The other blood work looked normal.  Today we saw Dr. Eugene Kwon,  Scott's primary  provider who explained the test results and is directing his care, and Dr. Sean Park, Mayo Radiation Oncologist. Dr. Kwon was already prepared with a plan at our 7:15 am appointment today. Dr Park was not even on the schedule but made time for Scott ( thanks to Dr. Kwon,)  when the PMSA pet scan showed some new mets that need to be addressed now. Dr. Kwon talked to Dr. Park, who got Scott in for the consult today, and then Dr. Park designed the simulation, which also happened today. Mayo Visit January 3-4 2024 with Dr Kwon and his team

  First, we are incredibly grateful to Dr. Kwon and his team. We have complete faith in them which makes the journey so much easier. Even so it is always stressful when testing is coming up as well as waiting for results. We are truly fortunate that because Mayo is so efficient it is a very short wait for results and decisions. Scott’s PSA went up a bit further over the last few months and he has some small visible m etastases (mets) revealed from the choline pet scan. One is the right clavicle from the last visit, and a “tiny” spot on a left rib, and an “indeterminate” spot on a lymph node. If you know Scott’s history, you know prior to chemo a couple of years ago Scott had a significant amount of bone and lymph node mets based on both the choline and PSMA pet scans. The PSMA pet scan tended to show more of the bone mets, the choline more of the lymph node mets. These all faded away through chemotherapy and hormone deprivation therapy. Cash Sweat and Tears award, Philly

Scott took a break from biking, after pushing past 7000 miles and getting to Santa Barbara, CA., for us to fly to Philly to attend an awards luncheon. We are very honored to have received the Cash, Sweat & Tears award at the Peer-to-Peer Professional Forum’s annual recognition of the year’s most inspiring volunteers. sponsored by Blackbaud.  See the linked press release here . Zero Prostate Cancer nominated Scott for this award for his drive and motivation to raise funds and awareness for prostate cancer. The CEO of Zero, Courtney Bugler, introduced us, underscoring the persistence, determination and work ethic Scott has exhibited throughout the 7000 miles, and 8 months of the journey.
